Pamukkale Hierapolis Ancient City

Pamukkale Hierapolis Ancient City name’s come from the Greek language which means sacred city. The city is located near Denizli province on the western side of Turkiye nowadays. On the other hand, the founder of Pergamon Telephos’s wife who was the queen of Amazon’s Hiera named after this city as Hierapolis.

There are lots of Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine ruins left today. In the Byzantine era, the city was a holy point for them thanks to Philip the Apostle. He was crucified in 80 AD. His tomb was found in Hierapolis in 2011 AD.

The most important points to visit in Hierapolis are City walls, Amphitheatre, Frontinus Gate, Temple of Apollo, Necropolis, Cleopatra’s Pool, Basilica Baths, Hammams, Museum, and the last but most important one Travertines (Hot Springs).

Theatre was made in Greek order. Theatre’s construction lasted in Flavius, Hadrianus, and Severus eras. Friezes, relief, columns, and stories can be seen. Hellenistic statues are also renovated.

Cleopatra’s Pool, which is open to swimming. The water contains lots of minerals like bicarbonate, sulfate, and carbon dioxide, as well as iron. So it’s good for skin diseases etc. The water is very good for heart disease, blood pressure, rheumatism, paralysis, nerve, and vascular disease, etc. This clearly reveals the reason for the establishment of health centers around Pamukkale since the Roman Period.

Hot Springs / Travertines, are not open to swimming you can only walk and use the mud for your skin. It seems like a Pamuk “cotton” in Turkish that’s why the name comes from there.
